Lessons from Women Who Built Empires on Relationships
Madam C.J. Walker became the first female self-made millionaire in American history.
Not through advertising. Not through viral content. Not through growth hacks.
Through relationships.
She built an empire of over 20,000 sales agents across the country. Women who didn’t just sell their products. Women who believed in her mission. Women who recruited other women. Women who became walking referral networks in their own communities.
Walker didn’t just build a business. She built a movement powered by trust, connection, and the radical belief that women could lift each other economically.
That’s Relationship Currency.
And it’s the same system that works today for women-led businesses and mission-driven organizations who are tired of chasing clients and ready to build something sustainable.
The Referral Problem Nobody Talks About
Here’s what I see constantly in my work:
Business owners who are doing all the right things. Posting consistently. Sending newsletters. Showing up at events. Running ads. Building funnels.
And still sitting in feast-or-famine cycles.
One month, referrals flow in and everything feels easy. The next month, crickets. Panic sets in. You start saying yes to clients who aren’t the right fit. You start questioning everything.
The problem isn’t your marketing. The problem is that referrals feel random because you don’t have a system for them.
Think about it: 70% of clients for service-based businesses come through referrals. For nonprofits, the number is even higher for major donors and partnerships. Yet most of us spend 90% of our marketing energy on the other 30%.
We’re optimizing the wrong thing.
What Madam C.J. Walker Understood
Walker understood something fundamental: people refer people they trust to people they trust.
She didn’t just sell hair care products. She created a community. She trained her agents personally. She celebrated their successes publicly. She built a system where everyone who joined felt valued, supported, and invested in each other’s growth.
That’s not a sales strategy. That’s a relationship strategy.
And here’s the thing: you don’t need 20,000 agents to apply this. You need 10 to 15 Core Connectors. People who already know your work. People who would refer you if they heard from you more consistently. People who believe in what you do.
You probably already have them. You’re just not nurturing them.
Ella Baker and the Power of Relationships Over Personalities
While we’re talking about women who understood sustainable growth, let me tell you about Ella Baker.
She was one of the most influential organizers of the Civil Rights Movement. She helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She mentored the students who started the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She was in the room for nearly every major moment of the movement.
But you might not know her name. And that was by design.
Baker believed that movements should be built on relationships, not personalities. She famously said, “Strong people don’t need strong leaders.”
She didn’t seek the spotlight. She built systems. She trained leaders. She created infrastructure that outlasted her.
That’s sustainability.
And it applies directly to your business. If your growth depends entirely on you being visible, you being everywhere, you being “on” all the time… that’s not sustainable. That’s a recipe for burnout.
But if you build relationships that carry your business forward? If you nurture a network that refers you even when you’re not posting? That’s an asset that compounds over time.
The Relationship Currency Method
After nearly two decades of building businesses this way, I’ve developed a simple framework called the Relationship Currency Method.
It’s built on three core concepts:
- The 3-Tier Network
Not all relationships are equal. You can’t treat 500 LinkedIn connections the same way you treat your 10 closest collaborators. So we organize your network into three tiers:
- Tier 1: Core Connectors — 10 to 15 people who actively champion you or could with the right nurturing. Goal: monthly touchpoints.
- Tier 2: Collaborators — Professionals you respect who respect you back. Goal: quarterly touchpoints.
- Tier 3: Community — People who know, like, and trust you but aren’t in regular contact. Goal: consistent visibility.
Most people spend all their energy on Tier 3 (posting content, growing followers) while completely ignoring Tier 1 (where referrals actually come from).
- The 5 Deposits
Every interaction is either a deposit or a withdrawal. There are five types of deposits:
- Check-in messages (with no agenda)
- Celebrating milestones
- Sharing useful resources
- Engaging meaningfully on social media
- Making introductions
Notice what’s not on this list: asking for referrals. Pitching your services. Selling.
You don’t have to sell. You just have to stay connected.
- The Relationship Currency Rhythm
This system works because it’s sustainable. It doesn’t require hours of your week.
- Weekly (15 minutes): Comment on 3 to 5 posts from your network. Send 3 to 5 personal check-ins.
- Monthly (2 to 3 hours): Schedule 2 to 3 coffee chats with Core Connectors.
- Quarterly: Deeper relationship building. A small gathering. Handwritten notes. An event together.
That’s it. Fifteen minutes a week compounds into referrals you can count on.
This Works. I’ve Seen It.
I can trace nearly a million dollars in revenue back to a single relationship I nurtured over time. Check-ins when I didn’t need anything. Celebrating her wins. Being genuinely interested in her work.
When the opportunity came, my name was the only one she mentioned.
My clients have done the same. One built a six-figure pipeline from relationships she’d been ignoring. Another traced her best contracts back to coffee chats she almost didn’t have.
This isn’t theory. This is how sustainable businesses are built.
