Show Me the Money

People launch businesses because they want to work for themselves and be their own boss. They want to have more freedom in their day-to-day and have a healthier work/life balance. People want to pursue their passions and actually love their work. And unless you’re starting a nonprofit, you probably want to make some money along the way.

At one point or another, you’ve probably heard someone say that money isn’t the most important thing. Maybe you’ve said it a few times yourself.

And I would have to agree. But before I dive into why, I want to share this quick disclaimer: none of what you’re about to read means you shouldn’t be paid well for your products or services. That’s actually the exact opposite of what I believe.

What I do believe, however, is that it’s more important to work with your ideal client than it is to just work with everyone because they’re going to pay you well. And there are a few reasons why:

1. Your business will grow faster.

When you’re really clear on who your target audience is and who your ideal client is, you’ll notice that you’re getting more business. This happens because you’ll begin to do everything with your ideal client in mind – creating content, tailoring services, choosing prices, etc. When you’re crystal clear on your ideal client, that’s exactly who your business will attract – getting you more clients, faster, who align with your business goals and objectives.

2. People start to refer you more.

People talk. And people appreciate referrals from their friends on other folks in their industry. When you work with your ideal clients, they’ll start to share you with their network – which in turn will increase your inquiries. This kind of word-of-mouth marketing removes the guess work for potential clients and makes it easier for them to decide to work with you.

3. You can charge a premium.

Once you really start to get more experience working with your ideal client, you’ll eventually be able to comfortably charge a premium price. Why? Because you will have positioned yourself as the expert – the go-to person for your target audience. Your ideal client will learn to trust you and your expertise; they won’t need to question whether or not you’re worth the investment. This is, of course, contingent upon the quality of work you provide – but I’m sure you’ll provide excellent service!

So, you see, this is why working with your ideal client is so crucial to the overall success of your business. In the early stages of launching, you may feel inclined to work with every single person who inquires about your services because you want the experience and need the money.

And while that may be okay initially, you’ll learn who is (and who isn’t) a good fit. Once this happens and you identify your ideal client, you’ll soon start to reap a ton of benefits.
